What is Hyperthyroidism?

Hyperthyroidism means your thyroid makes too much thyroid hormone. Having too much thyroid hormone can make a lot of things in your body speed up.

What are the Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism?

• You may lose weight quickly,
• Feel exhausted
• Have a fast heartbeat and severe palpitations
• Your hands may shake
• You sweat a lot
• Feel nervous and anxious
• Have diarrhea
• Have hair loss

When hyperthyroidism is treated, you can lead a healthy life.
Without treatment, hyperthyroidism can lead to serious heart problems, bone and muscle problems, and a dangerous condition called thyroid storm.

What is Hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism means your thyroid is not making enough thyroid hormone. Having a low level of thyroid hormone affects your whole body.
During pregnancy, untreated hypothyroidism can harm your baby.
Luckily, hypothyroidism can be treated when diagnosed.

What are the Symptoms of Hypothyroidism?

• Feeling tired, weak
• Feeling depressed
• Dry skin and brittle nails and hair loss
• Constipation
• Swelling
• Memory problems or having trouble thinking clearly.
• Heavy or irregular menstrual periods.
• Severe hypothyroidism can lead to a rare but dangerous disease called Myxedema coma.

Symptoms occur slowly over time. At first you might not notice them, or you might mistake them for normal aging.

Should you be tested for Hypothyroidism?

It’s important to watch for signs of the disease so it can be treated promptly. These signs may be easy to miss, so ask our doctor for appropriate testing, especially if you are at risk for hypothyroidism. People most at risk for hypothyroidism are:

• Older people: People of any age can get hypothyroidism, but older adults are more likely to get it. Women age 50 and older have the highest risk.
• People with a family history of thyroid problems.
• People with arthritis and diabetes.
• Pregnant women

What are Thyroid Nodules?

Thyroid nodules are growths or lumps in the thyroid gland. Most thyroid nodules are not cancer and do not cause problems, however about 5 to 7% of nodules can be cancerous, in some cases up to 15%.

What are the Symptoms of Thyroid nodules?

Most thyroid nodules are so small that you don’t even know you have one.
If you have a big nodule, you may be able to feel it, or you may notice swelling in your neck. It’s possible that you may also:

• Feel pain in your throat or feel like your throat is full.
• Have a hard time swallowing.
• Have trouble breathing.

How are Thyroid nodules Diagnosed?

The doctor may find a nodule on your thyroid on exam. Sometimes a thyroid nodule is found when you are having a neck imaging for another reason.
If a Thyroid nodule is detected:

• Blood test to check the level of thyroid hormone in your body is needed.
• Thyroid ultrasound, to see the number and size of nodules.
• Thyroid biopsy, to check the nodule for cancer may be needed.
